Between
2004 and 2007, the 13th World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov recorded a
substantial 3-volume Najdorf video course. ChessBase is publishing this
timeless classic as a complete edition in the current ChessBase Media
format. Look forward to this masterpiece of chess!
The
Najdorf system of the Sicilian Defence has a legendary reputation as a
defensive weapon for Black. It is an opening where people often strive
for a full point, instead of simply defending the position with the
black pieces. Many great players have contributed to the development of
this
complex opening. There were two world champions who formed much of
their careers using the Najdorf system as their weapon of choice against
1.e4: Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov celebrated spectacular successes
with it. Both players used the Najdorf during their child prodigy years
and retained it as an important part of their repertoire during their
entire careers.
For
Garry Kasparov this meant experience with the Najdorf at the very
highest levels of chess. For chess amateurs and professionals alike, it
is a great moment when the world's leading expert shares all the secrets
of his favourite opening.
In
this video course Garry Kasparov introduces the various sub-systems of
the Najdorf, including the central "Poisoned Pawn" variation.
Furthermore he devoted a chapter to the main lines against 6.Bg5 e6
7.f4. This includes the legendary Polugaevsky Variation. Last but not
least, Kasparov examines the move 6.Be3, which is today considered the
main line in the Najdorf System. The development of each line is placed
in historical perspective and examined in great depth, with Kasparov's
characteristic intensity. More than 9 hours of first-class private
tuition.

Pal Benko left the world of chess an enormous legacy. Not only was he a formidable study composer, he also gave his name to the gambit line 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5. In this DVD, Erwin l’Ami guides you through the fascinating Benko Gambit. As early as move three Black starts a fight for the initiative, a strategy that has proved to be successful in countless amateur and master level games.
Through model games l’Ami explains all topical lines of the Benko Gambit, occasionally asking the viewer interactive questions that help the viewer to grasp the ideas behind this opening. The exercises on this DVD will also surely be of help. Many top players followed in Benko’s footsteps, most notably Garry Kasparov, Veselin Topalov, and Magnus Carlsen. Will you be next?

The Two Knights Defence is one of the oldest opening lines in chess history. The sharp positions, arising after the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5, have intrigued players for many decades! World Champions like Wilhelm Steinitz and Bobby Fischer shaped the opening, and in more recent years, Nigel Short has popularized it. In the main lines, black gambits a pawn – with fascinating consequences. This DVD is aimed at players of both sides, giving an objective overview of all relevant theoretical lines. The DVD also includes a database with model games and an interactive section with memory markers and tactics where the viewer can test his newly acquired knowledge.

Always wanted to play like a World Champion? Search no further! With Magnus Carlsen using the Sveshnikov variation as his weapon of choice in the World Championship match against Fabiano Caruana, this DVD could not be better timed. The Dutch grandmaster Erwin L‘Ami (former second of Veselin Topalov and currently seconding Anish Giri), guides you through this dynamic opening variation. The DVD offers a complete overview of this fascinating opening that has inspired generations of chess players!
The basic Sveshnikov position is reached after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5. Erwin L’Ami will take you through all important lines, the two main Lines after 9.Nd5 and 9.Bxf6 but also on the trendy and probably new main Line 7.Nd5. Flexible plans for Black and strong weapons against the majority of White’s deviations from the main line are presented in an easy-to-understand manner. Most of the key ideas are illustrated with great examples from notable games between famous chess titans including Kasparov, Anand, Petrosian, Smyslov, and Kharlov. In this DVD, FM Lilov will teach you a plan for Black with a6, b5, Bb7, Nbd7 and c5, which is one of the best ways to meet White’s Queen’s Gambit. For those of you who like to experiment more in the opening, the FIDE Master has prepared a creative plan with Bg4. Video running time: 4 h 23 min.
FM Valeri Lilov also known as Tiger Lilov is probably the one who once taught you chess and you still remember those little things that come to your mind when you most need them. Today, he is one of the most famous and quality online chess coaches that you will see on virtually all major chess websites on the internet. His balanced style of play and constant striving for improvement have both shaped his deep knowledge of chess theory, which he is about to demonstrate to you in his first high quality DVD for ChessBase.

Do you like positional chess? Have you ever dreamed of playing the most stable openings that leave your tactical opponent with nothing but a cramped position? In this DVD, FM Valeri Lilov will present you with a complete opening repertoire for both White and Black, consisting of various solid opening systems leading to stable and flexible positions and providing many opportunities for intricate manoeuvring and creative planning! Some of these great openings include certain lines in the English Opening and the Queen’s Gambit, as well as whole opening systems like the Torre Attack for White. On the other hand, the Classical Variation and the Bronstein-Larsen Variation in the Caro-Kann are two of the many great lines FM Lilov has selected for Black. Let one of the best coaches on the internet guide you through the maze of positional chess where none of your tactical opponents’ tricks will work! Learn how to take advantage of your positional style of play with the help of the Tiger. Video running time: 4 h 00 min

The flank attack is one of those sneaky ways of surrounding your opponent’s forces and getting to your target fast! So, do we really need to master flank attacks to use them or protect ourselves rom them effectively? The answer is a resounding “Yes!” In this DVD, FM Valeri Lilov dwells on the importance of understanding flank attacks by presenting a number of concepts and typical scenarios with which a master of the flank attack should be familiar. The role of the centre during a flank attack and the typical patterns you should recognise before correctly initiating a flank attack are some of the themes the author explains and illustrates with good examples taken from the best games of renowned chess masters such as Alekhine and Capablanca. On the other hand, the FIDE master also teaches how to thwart your opponent’s flank attacks in different positions and the golden rule to know when you are on the defensive. This DVD gives the answers to all these questions and more! Video running time: 4 hours

Do you have a fantastic memory and a liking for sharp positions, the evaluations of which can change with a few taps of a computer button? If so, then the main lines of the Open Sicilian are for you. But if you are one of the 99% of chess players who do NOT fall into this category, and open 1 e4, then the Closed Sicilian is a worthwhile option.
The Closed Sicilian offers White a set of easy-to-understand plans, the chance of a kingside attack and little danger of being outgunned by tactics in the opening. In this video course I will introduce you to several different lines, all operating under the Closed Sicilian banner, but which are all separate in their own way. You will have variety at your disposal! First, we will look at the main lines of the Closed Sicilian, where I will recommend a practical system for White. Then we go on to look at 2 d3, where you have the extra option of c2-c3, instead of Nc3. Finally, we will look at the unexpected 2 Be2!?, where White generally tries to turn the game into a reversed Dutch.
All these weapons have distinct merit, and will make up a dangerous arsenal for club-players worldwide to face-down the Sicilian. The Closed Sicilian remains a solid and promising option for White, avoiding sharp theory and guaranteeing a complicated middlegame position with plenty of winning chances. We begin our investigation with that positive thought

Before the endgame, God created the middlegame, but you will never reach the middlegame if you misplay the opening! ‘Catastrophe in the Opening’ is a study of how the games of contemporary players go awry the initial stages of the game and as such, will prove instructive at all levels. It’s designed to help you avoid disaster in your own games by learning from the typical mistakes of others. By studying the games on this DVD, it is the author’s hope that you will develop increased tactical control and an increased sense of danger. Virtually all the games are from the last few years and nearly all have extensive notes. The overall level of chess in 2014 is higher than ever, but this does not mean that accidents in the opening do not happen. Far from it, as you are about to see!

There seems very little room to create new opening ideas in 2010 and the creative competitor must work hard to find new approaches which help to win games. Enter 1.f4, Bird’s Opening! 1.f4 has hardly been given comprehensive coverage in the textbooks and on this new ChessBase DVD, International Master and Senior FIDE Trainer Andrew Martin examines this ‘last frontier’ of sound and original opening play.
A repertoire is suggested for White, a little off the beaten track, where the emphasis is on setting new problems for the opponent and putting Black under pressure to find original solutions, right from move one! There can be no doubt that 1.d4 always provides entertainment and interesting positions. If the opening is mastered it will produce excellent results over the board. Back in the late seventies and eighties it was the Trompowsky Opening (1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5) which was giving Black a serious headache. Will 1.f4 continue in the same tradition in 2010 and beyond? Video running time: 3 hours.

Naturally, a universal approach using ...Nf6, ...g7-g6 and ...d7-d5 as the base would be very useful for players of all classes, saving time and energy and promising a fluid, dynamic position. I’ve found Korchnoi’s advice to be mostly true, but there are a few important exceptions when Black can do better than just trot out the Grünfeld Formula. Look out for those differences! This is a course full of opening ideas and suggestions for Black, against all of: 1 b3 1 b4 King’s Indian Attack 1 f4 1 c4 1 Nf3 QP Systems including London, Torre, Trompowski, Barry Attack, Colle, Stonewall. It was back in the 1920s that the Russian master Benjamin Blumenfeld invented his famous gambit 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 b5!?, and to the present day the opening retains great popularity. Black plays for the initiative and the win from the word go. It’s all about the centre. Who will be the first to dominate this important area of the board? A fierce, immediate fight breaks out, and if either player does not know what to do, a crushing defeat could be the result. This opening is ideal for club and tournament players.

Not quite a London System and not quite a Veresov. The unusually named 'Barry Attack' lies somewhere between the two. Yet another challenging queen pawn system that Black has to prepare for. In fact, the 'Barry Attack' had roots as early as 1922, when Tartakower experimented with what was then an unknown opening, but didn't really take off until the late 1970's and 1980's, when a whole series of strong players such as Niaz Murshed and several English masters started to win game after game with it. On this new ChessBase video course, FIDE Senior Trainer and IM Andrew Martin gets you ready to play the Barry in your own games. Players under 2200 will benefit the most. It turns out that after 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3 g6 3 Nc3!? d5 4 Bf4 Bg7, White has no less than four dangerous moves, 5 e3, 5 Qd2, 5 Nb5 and 5 h3, all of which are considered here. Your final choice will be a question of taste. The Barry Attack has developed into a winning weapon, which even world-class Grandmasters use in the modern day. In this ChessBase video course, you are going to find what the Barry is all about.

Nimzo’s other defence, 1 e4 Nc6!?, is a fascinating opening which can lead to diverse types of positions. Black is not committed to anything; in fact he may encounter different pawn structures and varied development plans out of the variations that arise. On this all-new ChessBase DVD, FIDE Senior Trainer Andrew Martin maps out an aggressive repertoire for Black, which is ideal for the club player. Few below the rating of 2000 will know what to do against 1..Nc6 and could easily get into a disasterous mess right out of the opening. The repertoire consists of: 1 e4 Nc6 2 Nf3 a) 2..d6 (Tough, positional) b) 2...d5 (Open, aggressive, unorthodox) 1 e4 Nc6 d4 d5 3 e5 Bf5! (Solid with attacking intent) 1 e4 Nc6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 e6! (A Nimzovich favourite in the French, which is very topical in 2015). If you like soundly-based, but unorthodox chess, then 1 e4 Nc6 might very well be the opening for you. It’ s a perfect surprise weapon and designed for Black to play for the win.

Thirty years ago the Trompowski opening was almost totally unknown. It took a few spectacular games by Rafael Vaganian to bring 2 Bg5 into the limelight, and after that, the die was cast. Today 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 is used by many of the best players in the world and a whole body of complicated theory has built up. In this fascinating DVD, International Master Andrew Martin traces the history of the opening from those early days, through the ‘golden age’ of the late 1980’s and 1990’s, and shows how the theory and ideas have evolved into the sharp and dangerous weapon that the Trompowski undoubtedly is today. Martin simplifi es the theory of 2005 and creates an easy to understand repertoire for the White player that recaptures the pioneering spirit of those early days...with interest! He argues conclusively that 2 Bg5 can still lead to original chess. Games from Vaganian, Hodgson, Bellon, Miladanovic, McShane, Ivanchuk and a whole cast of excellent players help to demonstrate why.

The Veresov ( 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nc3 d5 3 Bg5) is little-played and understood when we compare it to other queen’s pawn openings, like the Trompowsky, Torre Attack and London system. As such it can be a very dangerous weapon in the right hands. Very few club or amateur players will be properly prepared to play against it. The Veresov is an attacking opening, based on quick minor-piece development followed by effective pawn levers to open the game. Many strong grandmasters have used the Veresov as a surprise weapon, including Spassky, Tal, Bronstein, Alburt and Gufeld. Modern exponents include Miladinovic and Jonny Hector, with whom the Veresov is a special favourite. On this all-new ChessBase DVD Andrew Martin introduces the opening and discusses how the main themes work. After that comes a selection of repertoire choices. Finally, there is a quiz, where you may test yourself about what you have learned. This DVD is an ideal introduction to this opening for players below 2000 or busy players who would like to play aggressive chess, but do not have time to learn the main lines. The Veresov is worth studying and playing!

„Easy to learn and easy to play." These
are the twin pillars on which the Modern Scandinavian has been built and
which club players have trusted and profited from over the past few
decades. Which line should Black adopt after 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3?
Here we focus on the sharp 3...Qd6 as opposed to 3...Qa5 or 3... Qd8.
All the main responses aside from 3 Nc3 are shown in exemplary games and
the result is an insightful overview for club players which will stand
the test of time and not require too much burning of the midnight oil.
The Scandinavian is a practical opening. You can use this to your
advantage. Two helpful tools will help you get this exciting opening
into your opening practice.
You can practice the variations with the
ChessBase Opening Trainer. Drilling the opening moves, guessing how a
position arose or just replay the moves in your desired speed further
reveal the ideas this opening has to offer. Playing out positions
against Fritz will further enable you understand the ideas the author
presented in his videos.

In 2007 we viewed Alekhine’s Defence as an excellent opening to play if Black wants to gofor the win and four years later this has not changed. If anything, more Grandmasters areusing the opening today. Black gets a tough and resilient position with ample opportunityfor counterchances.
With 1...Nf6 he immediately throws down the gauntlet to the pawn on e4 and tries to take the initiative from the very first moves. This is a particularly effective game-plan at club level, where knowledge of exact theory is sketchy and where a passive response to immediate aggression is commonplace. So in the fully updated ABC of the Alekhine, we take a look at how the opening stands in 2011. 1...Nf6 seems to have a bright and enduring future. IM Andrew Martin provides sound, active recommendations for Black, modified if necessary to account for the passing of time and which can be used at all levels of play. To underestimate Alekhine‘s Defence would be a big mistake indeed!Video running time: 7 h 30 min!

The Benko Gambit is one of the most profound contributions to opening theory of the 20th century.
Black sacrifices a pawn as early as move three for enduring positional pressure. On this new ChessBase DVD, International Master Andrew Martin traces the history of the gambit from the games of Opocensky, Lundin and Stoltz back in the 1930s, through the golden age of Bronstein, Benko and Browne all the way to the present day, where the gambit is as popular as ever. Martin describes the main themes and ideas of the gambit and gives sound guide lines, so that any one who wants to play for the initiative with Black and play the Benko Gambit, will be very well equipped. Do you want to play for the initiative with Black? Then the Benko Gambit is surely for you. The DVD contains 6 hours video lessons, the latest ChessBase 9.0 Reader as well as an unannotated database of the contents. The 2010 update includes many recent games from top-class play and produces a balanced portrait of how the gambit stands today. Critical lines such as the Fianchetto variation with an early Rb1 are examined closely and Black is found to be in good shape. The Benko Gambit seems as playable as ever! Video running time: 6 hours
