D´Costa: Chess Prodigies Uncovered: Sergey Karjakin
Sergey Karjakin hit the headlines in 2002 when he became the world’s youngest ever grandmaster aged just 12 years 7 months, a record which shocked the chess world and still stands today. In the first of this new series with ChessBase, IM Lorin D’Costa investigates one of the most famous prodigies of modern times – Sergey Karjakin. In this DVD, D’Costa focuses mainly on Sergey’s early career from aspiring 9 year old up to grandmaster at 12, culminating in his current world top 10 status, and on who his rivals are for the title of world champion. Not many chess players can say they defeated a grandmaster at age 11, but Sergey did when he defeated Pavel Eljanov in the Ukrainian Team Championships in 2001, and from a level endgame at that! How did Sergey defeat one of the world’s best players, Alexei Shirov, with masterful precision at the age of just 12? How did Sergey grind down the reigning world champion Vladimir Kramnik in 2004 in an opposite coloured bishop ending in the Dortmund playoff aged just 14? Enjoy these and many other scintillating games, along with the new ChessBase interactive format of Question & Answer, to enjoy an interesting documentary about one of the strongest players in modern day chess and his road from young prodigy to grandmaster and beyond! Korchnoi: My life for chess
Viktor Korchnoi ( 1931 - 2016 ) was undoubtedly one of the most fascinating personalities in the chess world. The two-time World Championship finalist played successful and attractive chess, even into old age. In 2006 he visited ChessBase and recorded his video biography "My life for chess". With these recordings Korchnoi created a living memorial to himself and his great chess career. This historical document is now available again: remastered by ChessBase, playable on many platforms (Windows, Mac) or as a stream and supplemented with a game database. Korchnoi presents many of his most brilliant efforts from the years 1949-2005, among them, games against Smyslov, Geller, Tal, Huebner, Karpov, Kasparov, Spassky and Short. In each case Korchnoi describes in detail the story of the game, never beating around the bush, sometimes criticising his opponents harshly, but also lavishing praise on them when due. Embedded in the game commentaries are many details of Korchnoi's biography; for instance, before commenting on his game against Spassky, the veteran speaks extensively about his personal relationship with the exworld champion. Throughout these lectures, you can feel Korchnoi's enduring love for chess. Whenever the great master gets to the heart of an opening (King's Indian, English and French) or shows an astonishing move, one can see the joy sparkling in his eyes. Little wonder – no other chess genius has lived chess as intensively as "Viktor the Terrible". A must-have for every chess fan! • Video running time: 7 h 36 min. (English) • Database with more than 5,000 games by Viktor Korchnoi

Shirov: My best Games in the Nimzo-Indian
With this DVD on the Nimzo-Indian Defence (including the Catalan and the Queen‘s Indian) Alexei Shirov continues the successful and highly praised series about his best games. As in the preceding DVDs the Latvian super grandmaster succeeds in spoiling his public with analysis of a high quality and with exciting insights into his games, and he does so in his own reserved, pleasant and modest style. The DVD concentrates on the Classical Nimzo-Indian with 4.Qc2. But when playing against the very solid Nimzo-Indian, which the author faced most often as White, it is enormously important to be able to vary your opening lines and so the author himself often switches to 3.Nf3; this then leads to games with 3.b6 (Queen‘s Indian) or 3.d5 4.g3 (Catalan). Amongst the opponents in the games he presents are, for example, Topalov and Leko. Video running time: over 4 hours.   Alexej Shirov was born in Riga just like world champion Mihail Tal, and also his playing style reminds many chess fans of the young Tal. In the beginning of the 90ies, a comet-like rise brought the young Latvian to the world top within the shortest of time. Being no older than 22 years, he already had an Elo rating of nearly 2750 and belonged to the absolute elite. Since then Shirov has been one of the best players in the world, delighting all chess fans with original and amazing ideas on the board.   System requirements: Pentium-Processor at 300 Mhz or higher, 64 MB RAM, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Media Player 9.0, DVD drive

Shirov: My best Games in the Grünfeld
The Gruenfeld Indian is an active and dynamic reply to 1.d4 which can lead to complex and extremely sharp positions. So it’s no wonder that also Alexei Shirov included this opening – which at its début in tournament practice was called ”hypermodern” – into his repertoire. At the candidates’ fi nal against Vladimir Kramnik in Cazorla in 1998, he exclusively – and successfully – trusted the Gruenfeld Indian with Black; the victory over Kramnik gave him the right to play a WCh match versus Kasparov. In the first part of the DVD Shirov extensivly comments his five Black games from the Kramnik match, giving deep insights into opening preparation and match strategy on highest level. In the second part Shirov reveals, among other things, how in his opposite-coloured bishop endgame against Topalov in Linares in 1998 he found the amazing and unique move, which will secure the game a place in chess history forever. And this is not the only flash of inspiration the Super Grandmaster will present in his videos… Running time: 5:25 hours   Alexei Shirov was born in Riga just like world champion Mihail Tal, and also his playing style reminds many chess fans of the young Tal.
